When open, people as tall as 1.85 metres can stand up straight beneath it. When the lower section of the tailgate is open, a flat surface is created that allows luggage to be loaded with ease. Modern and sporty in design, its ergonomic shape makes it simple to operate. The left-hand shift gate operates the sports automatic mode to allow semi-automatic changes between the six gears. The right-hand shift gate controls the usual fully automatic settings: Drive (D), Neutral (N) and Reverse (R). One thing that is obvious, however, is that the revamped 4x4 is a capable machine. We've already driven the diesel, and took an early opportunity to try the latest range-topping 4.4-litre V8 example in the UK.

Changes to the lights and tailgate have softened the original's aggressive style, and quad pipes add an even sportier look. Besides 4.4i badging, the V8 is distinguished by a metallic grille. Inside, dark, grained plastics and supportive bucket seats create a luxurious cabin that comfortably accommodates five.

At £47,625, the X5 is far from cheap, but the engine and automatic gearbox give a fine mix of power and response. Capable of doing 0-60mph in seven seconds and a 150mph top speed, the mighty SUV can easily out-drag other road users - but it's not only straight-line performance that impresses.

Revised suspension and a new 19-inch wheel option for Sport models offer an excellent compromise between road holding and ride comfort. Despite its advancing years, the X5 remains a fine choice in this fast-growing class

Soru Bankasıhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05433083784272353259noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6028096328510307992.post-85681901829925820922007-11-19T11:12:00.000-11:002007-11-19T11:16:41.023-11:00New BMW X5 Photos

Soru Bankasıhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05433083784272353259noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6028096328510307992.post-21123599558082611672007-11-19T11:11:00.001-11:002007-11-19T11:11:44.438-11:00BMW X5 Buying Alternatives
The stupendous BMW off-roader has won plaudits for its amazing dynamic abilities, rock-solid image and potent performance. But its desirability, plus a long dealer waiting list, means used X5s are expensive - retaining more than 90 per cent of their value after 18 months - and as a result are few and far between.
Mercedes M-Class
The most obvious challenger to the X5's crown, the M-Class cashed in on demand for luxury SUVs on the American market. Build quality on early cars isn't as good as we've come to expect from Mercedes, but the M-Class has badge image to rival the X5 and is well equipped. CDI diesels are our favourite models, but all M-Classes are strong performers.
Engines: 3.2, 4,3, 5.0 and 5.4-litre petrol; 2.7-litre diesel. Years: 1998-present. Prices: GBP19,000-42,000
Jeep Grand Cherokee
With an off-road reputation that can only be rivalled by Land Rover, Jeep's luxury model is a fine vehicle if you enjoy rolling around in the mud. It's not a bad car on the tarmac, either, providing you can live with woolly steering and a wobbly ride. Interior build quality lacks the finesse of European competitors, but standard equipment is impressive nonetheless.
Engines: 4.0 and 4.7-litre petrol; 2.5, 2.7 and 3.1-litre diesel. Years: 1996-present. Prices: GBP9,000-27,000
BMW 5-Series
If it's the BMW image you're after, then there's no point having an X5 when you can buy the excellent 5-Series saloon for well under half the price. If you want to spend more, though, £30,000 will get you a stunning nearly new 51-plate 530i SE Touring. Apart from a lower ride height, it loses nothing to the X5 in terms of practicality or driver appeal.
Engines 2.0, 2.2, 2.5, 2.8, 3.0, 3.5, 4.4 and 4.9-litre petrol; 2.5, 3.0-litre diesel. Years: 1996-present. Prices: GBP7,000-40,000
Volvo V70 XC
The Volvo V70 might not be the obvious choice for people who want an SUV, but the Swedish company's jacked-up estate car is a surprisingly competent performer when the going gets sticky. Exceptionally refined and well trimmed inside, and with generous levels of standard equipment, the V70 Cross Country is a sensible choice, even if it lacks the upmarket appeal and image of the X5.
Engine: 2.4-litre petrol. Years: 2000-present. Prices: GBP17,000-28,000
Soru Bankasıhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05433083784272353259noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6028096328510307992.post-25476479207343629012007-11-19T11:09:00.002-11:002007-11-19T11:10:56.492-11:0023BMW X5 87.39%
23BMW X5 87.39%

Another Driver Power favourite that's slipped this year is the X5. In the top 10 last time out, it's fallen to 23rd in 2007. Like most of the 4x4s in the survey, the X5 has done well in the ease of driving rank, thanks to its high seating position and the popularity of automatic models. It's also comfortable and dynamically strong, attributes which many SUV rivals can't match. However, even though you tell us the interior feels very well screwed together, reliability has been problematic.

Your Quotes

“Super to drive, with good paintwork. Inside, there's revised accommodation and a stylish new gearlever, which creates more space on the centre console.

The biggest news is the increased seating capacity. Thanks to an extra 190mm of length, the X5 will be the first BMW ever to come with seven seats. Although the new layout will be an option when the car arrives in the UK, the design is more than just an afterthought. The rear end has been given a thorough revamp, and even with the extra seats in position, there's still 200 litres of luggage space.

Under the skin, there will also be a revised engine and transmission line-up. The popular 3.0-litre diesel is tweaked to produce 231bhp - up 13bhp - while fuel consumption has been improved by seven per cent. The 4.2-litre petrol powerplant will be dropped from the line-up, but the entry-level 3.0-litre has been uprated to produce more power, while the range-topping 355bhp 4.8-litre unit will be carried over.

Completing the X5's drivetrain package is an all-new six-speed auto which BMW claims has a shift time slashed by 50 per cent. We have caught the new seven-seater in production bodywork and with minimal disguise only, testing on public roads near BMW’s German headquarters.

BMW’s design team, headed by Dutchman Adrian van Hooydonk, combined contemporary styling with familiar themes from today’s X5 to create a distinctive SUV that’s instantly recognizable as a BMW. However, the new SUV is much less radical than the smaller X3 with which it shares much of its mechanical package.

Longer, wider and taller than today’s model, and with an extended rear overhang, the new X5 puts greater distance between itself and the X3, which should allow BMW to command higher prices. Inside, the X5 promises a 5-series-like interior. Five-passenger-seating is standard, but BMW will likely offer buyers two third-row seats as optional equipment.

Conventional steel springs will be used on lower-end models, with air suspension reserved for upmarket versions, along with an automatic self-levelling feature to maintain ride height when towing. BMW will also offer active steering on the new X5.

Power comes from a wider range of inline six-cylinder and V8 engines than today’s model, with several diesel units on tap for Europe. Among the gasoline engines is the recently upgraded 3.0-litre six. It will be joined from the outset by new 4.0- and 4.8-litre V8s.

The new X5 uses a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic gearbox and BMW’s xDrive four-wheel-drive system. As with the first-generation model, BMW has decided against hardcore SUV systems such as separate transfer case, locking differentials and automatically decoupling stabilizers. BMW engineers argue that the added weight would be detrimental to efforts to once again establish the X5 the most agile SUV on the road.

Soru Bankasıhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05433083784272353259noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6028096328510307992.post-36382547920037576032007-11-19T11:07:00.001-11:002007-11-19T11:07:49.049-11:00M's the word for flagship X5
BMW has given its big off-roader the M Sport treatment, and this is the result

Lowered suspension and big alloys hint at top-spec X5’s huge pace

Featuring a bodykit with modified bumpers, wheelarch extensions and side skirts, along with 19-inch alloys, the new range-topping X5 certainly looks the part.

With 90 per cent of buyers of the previous-generation model ordering their car in Sport trim, the new flagship spec is crucial for the brand

Inside, there's standard leather trim, sports seats, an M Sport steering wheel and anthracite-coloured headlining, while lowered and stiffened suspension makes sure the 4x4 has handling to match its looks.

With 90 per cent of buyers of the previous-generation model ordering their car in Sport trim, the new flagship spec is crucial for the brand. This question is best answered with an example. Two vehicles can have the same purchase price, but different ownership costs. The vehicle with the lower ownership costs is a better value than the one having the higher ownership costs.

To put this concept into action for the 2006 model year analysis, Vincentric first measured the cost of ownership for over 1,900 vehicle configurations. Cost of ownership is calculated by combining the costs associated with depreciation, insurance, repairs, maintenance (scheduled and unscheduled), finance, fuel, taxes and state fees (including the Federal Hybrid Tax Credit), and opportunity costs. This creates the "Measured" Cost of Ownership.

The vehicle's "Expected" cost of ownership is based on statistical models that correlate the price of a vehicle with cost of ownership within each of the 34 segments that comprise all vehicles. An average "Expected" cost to own is established. Any vehicle that falls above the Average Value line is a better value than a vehicle that fall below the "Average Value" line.

Vincentric uses this approach to rate each vehicle from Excellent to Poor on a five point scale. These ratings can also be expressed numerically as 5, 4, 3, 2 or 1, with a score of 5 being Excellent and 1 being Poor. The scores are calculated based on the percentage difference between a vehicle's "Expected" cost of ownership and its "Measured" cost of ownership.

This statistically driven approach allows Vincentric to measure value in an unbiased manner, and help consumers and the automotive industry better understand how ownership costs impact the creation of value for the buyer.

Depreciation

Depreciation is an estimate of the reduction in value incurred by owning and operating a vehicle over a period of time. The new six-cylinder turbodiesel is 25kg lighter than the previous engine thanks to a new all-aluminium crankcase. The BMW X5 3.0si’s six-cylinder petrol engine features Double VANOS (when the engine valves open) and VALVETRONIC (how much they open). The BMW 4.8i stats are a little tricky, as I could find the old X5 in 4.8si form, but the new X5 is a 4.8i, which explains the power drop in my comparison. Even for the 3.0 petrol, I am comparing the old 3.0i to the new 3.0si, because that is what BMW provided with the new model’s press release. Improved acceleration times are partly because of the new six-speed automatic gearbox that comes with the new E70 BMW X5. The new torque converter allows 50% quicker shifts.

New interior enhancements include BMW’s iDrive controller and a HUD display. There is also an electronic parking brake instead of the conventional design. Other improvements enhance the driveability of the car - Adaptive Drive and Active Steering. Adaptive Drive uses a combination of active hydraulic anti-roll bars and electronic damper control to counteract body roll during cornering. Other active safety features include Dynamic Stability Control+, which from the name I assume is an improved DSC. It can reach 100km/h in a sprightly 6.5 seconds on the way to a top speed of 240km/h.

Despite the bigger body and output of the engine, BMW is also claiming fuel economy has been reduced by five per cent.

Volume-selling models will include a 3.0-litre turbo-diesel six-cylinder (170kW, 520Nm) and a 3.0-litre six-cylinder petrol engine (200kW, 315Nm). Each has more power and better fuel economy than the models they replace.

Unlike the X5's most serious rival, the Mercedes-Benz M-Class, the X5 makes do with a six-speed automatic transmission, whereas the M-Class has a seven-speed.

However, BMW claims it's a new transmission that shifts with "unparalleled precision and efficiency".

The gear selector is also new, bringing with it more than a hint of computer game joystick to its design.
Boasting an electronic (rather than mechanical) link to the gearbox, the new selector returns to the same central location after use and features a park brake button on the toSoru Bankasıhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05433083784272353259noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6028096328510307992.post-42593566764885122562007-11-19T10:38:00.001-11:002007-11-19T10:38:44.736-11:00Caught on the Road
At first sight the second generation X5 looks like it carries on with the main characteristics from its predecessor. The new model has been developed under the code-name E70.

However, looking closer, the main difference is that the newcomer is about 16 cm longer and 6 cm wider than the current model. It is thus providing enough room for a third row of seats. Like with all the other modern luxury off roaders, also the new X5 can seat up to seven passengers, which quite obviously has become a must. Also the dashboard of BMW’s biggest off roader has been carefully revised to incorporate all new technical gadgets like a radar governed cruise control and BMW’s first night vision. An evolution of BMW’s x-Drive AWD system is in place, plus advanced wheel-by-wheel traction control.

Power is expected to come from two revamped Diesel engines, a 3,0 litre six cylinder / 231 HP and a 4,5 litre V8 / 330 HP. And from fuel engines starting with a 3,0 litre six cylinder / 258 HP up to a new V8 5,0 litre / 367 HP.

The new X5’s release is scheduled for October 2006, an M-version could be in the pipeline for later on.
Soru Bankasıhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05433083784272353259noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6028096328510307992.post-83368361679402711832007-11-19T10:31:00.000-11:002007-11-21T10:29:32.287-11:00New BMW X5MW has released the official images and information about the new X5 model range. The previous model, launched in 1999, was sold in more than 800,000 units worldwide.

The new BMW X5 replaces a very successful model: the previous X5 was sold in approximately 580,000 units worldwide since its launch in 1999, with over 240,000 units sold in the U.S. alone.

The technical features include eight and six-cylinder engines, new suspensions, enhanced BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive technology, as well as a weight-optimized bodyshell with increased torsional stiffness.

Electronic controls include Active Steering and AdaptiveDrive (a combination of Active Roll Stabilization and Electronic Damping Control).

The new X5 will be available in the U.S. with either a 4.8-liter V8 capable of 350 horsepower or a 3.0-liter inline-six with 260 horsepower.

From the official Press Release:

Design

According to BMW, "The new model captures and enhances the original’s look of powerful elegance and presence. The proportions of the former model have been carefully developed and enhanced. The overall look of the vehicle conveys a powerful touch of agility despite even larger dimensions – length up 7.4 inches, width by 2.4."

"This special style is ensured by the short body overhangs front and rear, as well as the larger wheels. The small distance between the front axle and instrument panel guides the eyes of the beholder even more directly to the front end of the new X5. The result is a perfect optical balance of the front and rear section."

The stretched side section borders at the rear on the powerful D-pillar. The lines of all pillars come together to form an appropriately shortened roofline supporting the overall impression of elegance and athleticism.

A classical BMW design feature from the side is the contour line at the same level as the door handles, rising slightly to the rear. This is where the vehicle’s convex and concave surfaces come together. The contour line starting behind the front wheel arches and encircles the entire rear section completely interrupted by the rear light clusters.

The powerfully domed contour of the engine compartment lid, the three-dimensional bars on the BMW kidney grille, and the headlight units integrated in the side panels all act together to give the front end of the new BMW X5 particularly powerful expression. The lines project a sense of urgency and motion. The contours reflect the muscular character of the X5. The dual round headlights appear to be slightly cut off at the top, giving the entire front end a clear and dynamic focus.

Powerful elegance is also the name of the game at the rear end of the new BMW X5. The high upper edge of the rear bumper accentuates the sheer width of the vehicle and, as a result, its strong and stable stance on the road. This impression is then further enhanced by the horizontal structure of the rear light clusters. Shaped in BMW’s typical L-design, they wrap far around into the rear tailgate. Four LED light rods give the new BMW X5 a powerful and striking appearance from behind, night or day.

The combination of convex and concave surfaces combines the flair of BMW’s SAV models with the presence of a premium vehicle. This entire configuration creates a dynamic flow of light and shade that gives the surfaces a clear structure. The muscular wheel arches enhance the X5’s presence while the clear accentuation of the horizontal wheel line expressed by the wide track again helps to give the new BMW X5 a truly individual look.

The body structure

Measuring 191.1 inches in length and 76.1 inches in width, the new BMW X5 is larger than its predecessor.

It has a drag coefficient of 0.34 (X5 3.0si): to achieve this result designers have included new features like the roof spoiler with aerodynamic edges integrated into the side for a precisely defined cut-off of air flow and the rear lights come with cut-off edges to improve the flow of air.

By suing lightweight technology, the torsional stiffness was increased approximately by 15 per cent from 23,500 to 27,000 Nm/degree.

Stiffness at the front is optimized without an increase in weight by low-lying support arms around the wheel arches which curve in towards the middle of the vehicle and provide a firm connection to the engine supports. Around the C-pillars a fully-closed torsion ring also serves to enhance body stiffness.

Body stiffness is further increased by wedges on the rear lid at medium height on the two D-pillars when closed. Contact between the wedge elements and the surrounds is ensured by way of the soft close function of the rear lid, and the improvement of stiffness at the rear is quite substantial. In fact, to achieve the same effect any other way, the engineers and body designers would have required additional metal sheet components weighing about 13 lbs.

High- and ultra-high-strength steel is used at the rear end of the new BMW X5 in order to achieve optimum stiffness and load resistance in a rear-end collision despite minimum use of material. At the front, in turn, use of a cast aluminum spring support serves to reduce weight while optimizing stiffness.

The front fenders and their modular supports are made of thermoplastic and the hood is made of aluminum. Apart from lower weight and greater freedom in design, one of these targets is also all-round protection for pedestrians.

To optimize passive safety of the passenger cell, crash forces acting on the vehicle are passed on via the engine supports and chassis along various load paths, preventing extreme loads on any individual bearing structures.

Interior Design

"Slender design and the harmonious transitions extending into the door linings give the instrument panel powerful and elegant flair all in one. Interacting with the load-bearing element of the center console and extending down to the bottom, the instrument panel appears to be hovering freely in space."

The higher, command seating position and the arrangement of the driver-oriented instrument panel convey the impression of uninhibited control. All functions and displays in the comfort zone in the middle of the dashboard are clear and easy-to-read even by the front passenger. The Control Display for the BMW iDrive operating system is housed on the instrument panel at the same level as the circular instruments putting it directly in the line of vision of both the driver and front passenger.

A new feature of the new X5 is the option of third row seats. This provides adequate space for two more passengers comfortably accommodating occupants up to approximately 5´ 6´´ in height.

These two seats come complete with three-point inertia-reel seat belts and headrests adjustable for height.

Enhanced comfort in the third row seats is ensured by separate heating and ventilation nozzles. When the seats aren’t needed, they may be stowed individually into the floor of the luggage compartment, completely out of sight. This provides a large cargo area from front to rear together with the second row seats folded down. Passengers in the second row of seats enjoy about 1.5 inches more kneeroom than in the former model.

Regardless of the number of seats being used, generous space is always offered behind the two-piece tailgate. The cargo floor is now almost 4 inches longer than before.

An additional storage compartment beneath the floor of the luggage compartment on models without a third row of seats offers an extra 3.15 cubic feet of storage space. Overall storage capacity for the new X5 is 75.2 cu. ft., an eight percent improvement over the previous model.

(Source: BMW)
Soru Bankasıhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05433083784272353259noreply@blogger.com0
